A Word to the Negroes. And All. (1909)

Landon West (Pleasant Hill, OH) in the Atlanta Independent, October 23, 1909:

To show all our people their chances to live,
And share in the blessings that Heaven may give,
With aid to our nation, to honor each race,
A word for the negroes is surely in place.

Their day, though a sad one, is coming in sight,
While they are now seeking to share all their right,
And here in our Nation, that boasts of its day,
The Negroes have reason to look for fair play.

The claim that the Negroes are lower than whites
May do in a Nation when of grading its rights,
But here, in a Nation, where each can have call,
The law should be level, for Negroes and all.

And statesmen may talk of their efforts and aims,
But right is the rule for the settling of claims,
So let not the Negroes our people bewail,
for this is the Nation where right should prevail.
See Dan. 2:44.
And many may fear that the Negroes will fail,
But whites are the people to have truth prevail;
So let our Nation, now show its good light,
That Negroes and all may now seek to do right.

Here chances are better than ever before,
While truth is now spreading its light on each shore;
So none need to fear that the right can be wrong,
But people should see that the truth makes them strong.
